Why I changed my signature WordPress web development service

As you may have heard if you follow me on social media or if you are subscribed to my mailing list, I am currently going through a rebrand.

As part of this process, I’ve been looking at my web development business with a fine-tooth comb and thinking about the changes I would like to make to improve my services and offerings.

One change I have decided to make is to my signature service. This is my web development service for web designers; the service I have been offering since I started my business seven years ago.

I’ve decided to change the name of my signature service…

My “WordPress Theme Development” service will now be called “WordPress Website Development”.

I know, it’s a small change! I’ve just swapped one of the words. But actually, it feels like an important change.

Something about the name wasn’t sitting right with me. By calling it “WordPress Theme Development” I felt like I was doing myself a disservice.

Because here’s the thing; I don’t just build WordPress themes.

What even is a WordPress theme?

Before we get into why I’ve decided to change the name of the service, I thought I’d explain what a WordPress theme actually is.

A WordPress theme is essentially is a collection of files. These files control the design and functionality of a WordPress website. A theme determines how a website looks and how content is displayed to users.

Every WordPress website needs a theme to function. You can’t have a WordPress website without a theme!

Themes come in all different shapes and sizes. There are pre-made themes which are designed to be used on multiple websites; some of which are free and some of which you have to pay for. There are also custom themes which are bespoke themes developed for a specific website with all the relevant functionality that is required.

As part of my signature service, I develop a custom WordPress theme using the designs provided by the web designer. And of course, developing a custom WordPress theme is still at the core of my signature service for designers.

However, what I deliver is more than just a theme, and this is where I feel the name was doing myself a disservice.

I deliver more than just a WordPress theme…

I don’t just develop a theme…

• I deliver a full website, powered by WordPress and a custom WordPress theme.
• I develop custom functionality, install and configure all the relevant plugins, and set up all the pages required on the website. 
• I optimise the website for speed and search engines (technical SEO), carry out cross-browser and device testing, and ensure that the website meets accessibility standards.
• Once the website is complete I install it on the client’s own hosting account and I provide assistance with hosting and domains if required.
• I create a bespoke suite of training videos to show the client how to use their website and provide post-handover technical support.

I’m sure you’ll agree that’s so much more than just a WordPress theme! This is exactly why I felt the need to change the name.

By changing from “WordPress Theme Development” to “WordPress Website Development”, I’m showing that I’m not just here to build themes. I’m here to build websites!

Other than that, my signature service is staying the same because I’m so confident in it! Through this service I have worked with so many talented designers and created so many standout websites for incredible business owners. It’s a tried and tested offering that not only benefits the web designers who outsource their development to me, but also their clients, who receive a high-quality website that they feel confident in at the end of the project.
