WordPress Website Development: Otta Design

Let me take you behind the scenes of a bespoke WordPress website I created for an London based interior design studio; Otta Design.

Otta Design is a small, dynamic interior design studio creating elegantly refined and carefully tailored spaces throughout London, the Home Counties, and beyond.

I was introduced to Otta Design by my clients Jess and Ros from The Home Page. They were looking to redesign their existing WordPress website, which was built using a pre-made theme with some customisations, to make it more elegant and upmarket.

The website designs were provided by the very talented Cat from Gatto, who I’ve been collaborating with since 2018. She nailed the brief and created a gorgeous website that feels luxurious and polished.

Let’s take a closer look at a couple of my favourite features of the Otta Design website:

Project pages built with the WordPress block editor

The Projects page is home to the client’s interior design portfolio and showcases some of the incredible projects they have worked on.

The projects pages were set up using a custom post type in WordPress, with the main page listing all of the projects, and each project having its own page. The individual project pages are built using the block editor, so it’s easy for the client to customise and create their own layouts.

They also feature a pop-up slideshow of images that was built using a custom block. It’s straightforward for the client to upload as many images as they wish to the slideshow. And as it uses lazy loading, there is no negative impact on the loading time of the page.

Press page with pop-up image slider

The Press page is a place for Otta Design to highlight their many magazine features.

Similarly to the Projects page, this is also built using a custom post type, but instead of each press feature leading to a new page, a pop-up slideshow opens so that you can see and read each magazine feature in full.

Blog archives and single post template

The Otta Design team wanted to start creating blog content for their website, so we utilising the built-in blog functionality in WordPress and developed custom archive and single post templates for the blog.

As with the Projects pages, new blog posts can be created using the WordPress block editor so the client has plenty of flexibility over the layout of each individual blog post.

At the end of each blog post is a section that automatically displays the most recent blog posts in a slider. The client has the ability to override the functionality that automatically pulls through the latest posts and can select which posts they’d like to display here from a dropdown list.

Here are some kind words from the Otta Design team about our time working together…

“From beginning to end, working with Holly to create our new website has been a happily collaborative, stress free and rewarding process. Holly is an excellent communicator, responding to all messages promptly and explaining technical processes clearly. Our new website was created on time, and totally to brief. The training videos she provides at the end are an excellent tool and very valuable. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the result and would highly recommend Holly’s services.”
