WordPress Website Development: Sacred Hour

Let me take you behind the scenes of a bespoke WordPress website I developed for Ohio based wellness spa, Sacred Hour.

Sacred Hour is a wellness spa with two locations in Lakewood and Rocky River, Ohio.

At Sacred Hour, they believe that healing begins with presence. Every treatment is designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and experience lasting renewal, inside and out.

When Laura from Studio Blanche reached out and asked if I would like to collaborate with her on a brand new website for Sacred Hour, I was over the moon. We’d previously worked together on the RÖ Skin website where I’d fallen in love with her elegant, minimalist design style. I was excited to team up again.

The existing Sacred Hour website was built on WordPress but with the Elementor page builder. Using Laura’s designs, created using Adobe XD, I developed a custom WordPress theme for the new Sacred Hour website and built it around the WordPress block editor, making the site faster, easier to edit, and more flexible for the future.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the highlights of the Sacred Hour website:

A bespoke and fully editable mega menu

The Sacred Hour website features a custom mega menu that the client has full editing control over.

Mega menus are a great way to keep primary navigation simple, especially on websites with lots of internal pages. On this site, hovering over a menu item reveals a soft, elegant panel with extra links, descriptions, and images to help users quickly find what they need.

The mega menu is fully editable by the client. The client can easily choose which links in the main menu to add a mega menu to, and in the mega menu itself they can customise the columns, titles, links and images. It was built using a mixture of the default menu functionality in WordPress and Advanced Custom fields.

Services built with a custom post type

Sacred Hour offer a wide variety of services including massages, facials, pedicures, manicures, scrubs and more.

To make content management easier, I created a custom post type for services, giving the client one central place to add, edit, and manage everything. Each service includes fields for the name, description, price, duration, and multiple booking links, all built using Advanced Custom Fields.

I also set up a custom taxonomy for the service categories (Massage, Skincare, Nails, etc). These are used to group and display services into neat, tabbed sections on the main Services page, making it super easy for users to browse and navigate.

The tabs on the Services page can be navigated with a keyboard alone making them fully accessible.

Optimised for speed

By building the site from scratch and using the WordPress block editor (instead of a page builder), I was able to keep the codebase lean and performance-optimised.

Combined with high-quality hosting (in this case, WPEngine), this means that Sacred Hour’s new website can be fully loaded in just 1.1 seconds. This is a win for both user experience and SEO.

Here are some kind words from Laura about what it’s like to collaborate with me…

“Working with Holly has been an amazing experience. Her custom WordPress development skills are unmatched, and she always ensures that every project is delivered on time and follows the design perfectly. Her communication and organisation are exceptional, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. Both we and our clients are always happy with the results. We highly recommend Holly to anyone looking for a talented and reliable developer!”
