Choucre (pronounced shoo-kurr) creates and sells Y2K-inspired luxury candles with unique scents. They’re cruelty-free, phthalate-free, hand-poured and 100% cute!
The branding for Choucre is inspired by the 90s and 00s, featuring cute illustrations of Gameboys and Tamagotchis.
Lyss, the founder of Choucre, was referred to me by Kaye Huett, the branding and web designer behind Kaye Does Logos. We’ve worked on a number of projects together, including the website we created for Resumeology, and it’s always so fun to bring Kaye’s designs to life.
Let’s take a closer look at a couple of my favourite features of the Choucre website:
WooCommerce integration for selling physical products
The main role of the Choucre website is Lyss’ business is to sell her unique candles, so of course we needed to integrate eCommerce functionality into the website.
As always, I used WooCommerce which is the most popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress. It’s ideal for selling physical products such as candles.
I created custom pages for the product categories, individual products, cart, and checkout that are styled to match the rest of the website’s branding.
Interactive quiz to help customers find their perfect scent
The Choucre website features an interactive quiz to help customers find their perfect candle scent. And there are a couple of reasons why I love this quiz.
Firstly, it’s a great way to help customers choose the right product for them. Choosing a candle based on scent can be difficult when you’re shopping online, but this quiz helps to customers to figure out which candle will be perfect for them.
Once you’ve completed the quiz you’re presented with your results as well as a link to shop the candles with that matching scent.
Secondly, it’s a clever way to build an email list. To find out your perfect scent you must enter your email address, and this is connected the client’s email marketing platform so that they can collect email addresses of potential customers.
So not only does this quiz add a fun and playful element to the website, it’s also strategic.
Draggable windows on the About page
Another fun element on the Choucre website is the About page. This page features draggable boxes that we styled to look like windows on a computer, fitting the 90s and 00s vibes.
About pages aren’t exactly known for being the most exciting pages on a website, but being able to drag and drop the windows on this page gives it an interactive dimension that’s really playful and unique.
Animations that don’t slow down the website
I love seeing animations on websites, but I don’t love it when they negatively impact on the speed of the website!
In the footer of the Choucre website is this animation:
While it may look like a GIF, it’s actually set up using a sprite and CSS transitions. The file size of the image sprite used in this animation is much smaller than what the file size of a GIF version of this animation would be, and so this animation doesn’t slow down the website.
